Responsible Parenting

Last Sunday helping at a checkpoint for an alleycat race. When was the last time you sat around and drank a few beers with friends in a parking lot? Long live bicycles, beers, and friends.

Krohn Conservatory's Annual Butterfly Show

This is the only place I know of where kids willingly allow insects to crawl all over them. See, for example...this photo.

Sunset over the 'wood

Norwood has a tendency to get a bad rap. For example, several of the businesses in this particular shopping center (Rookwood Plaza) say that they are in Hyde Park. We fondly refer to that attitude as Hyde Park near. Of course, I sometimes refer to my neighborhood (Hyde Park) as the place where white people go to die.

In any event, this is a lovely photo of the sky as seen from a shopping center in Norwood.

Cincinnati Freie Presse Co.

This is near the corner of 9th and Vine downtown.

The New York Times published an article in 1894 to note the paper's 21st birthday.

The complete article can be read from the New York Times archive here.

Young Abe Lincoln

"I shall prepare myself. Someday my chance will come."

Gift to the City of Covington from Eva G. Farris
Matt Langford, Sculptor

In front of the Kenton County Public Library at Fifth and Scott Streets.

Langford said the finished statue and base will stand about 8 feet high.

"The whole idea is to see him in terms of his potential, the beginning of his self development," said Langford, a 1979 graduate of Dixie Heights High School who studied at Northern Kentucky University.

He is a freelance sculptor who has done the majority of his work with toy companies such as Hasbro and Mattel. He also has done private commissions. Lincoln is his first public art.

The Art of Discovery launch last year coincided with a personal leap of faith by Langford.

"I had worked up this figure the prior year with the hope of pitching it to Covington," he said. "Lincoln is a Kentucky figure and I had thought of Covington as a gateway city between the North and South," he said. "I developed the figure and caught word of this competition and put two and two together."

Your Wedding By Jew

Truthfully, it took me hours and asking my wife for help to figure out that this reads "Your Wedding by Jen."

Whatever.

I still can't decide if I like this or not. I could not get a clean picture of the window's contents but I like the reflections.

Waffles and the Weekend!

I cannot wait for the weekend. I want waffles at Coffee Emporium! I want to sit outside and enjoy the day and read the Times. Is that too much to ask?

Yes, there are still farms in Ohio

This is a sod farm in Newtown - a Cincinnati suburb. Yes, they grow grass. This is approximately 10 minutes from downtown out Route 32.

This is Cincinnati Daily Photo's first shot in Newtown.

A view from Sycamore

If you are ever in Cincinnati be advised that downtown is a grid. Numbered streets run east/west and named streets run north/south. If you are lost the numbers start at the river and go up. The named streets go like this: Big Strong Men Will Very Rarely Eat Pork Chops: Broadway, Sycamore, Main, Walnut, Vine, Race, Elm, Plum, Central.

Central is on the end because downtown got split by the highways.

Its a long story for another day.

Shut your mouth - What? I'm just talkin' about Smitty's's

Vine Street in Over-the-Rhine has so many cool things to see. This is Smitty's - a clothier for the well dressed man. Or pimp. One of these days I'm going to go shopping there. I've always wanted a pair of alligator shoes.

Patoshniks

This mural is in an alleyway on Court Street near what is now Frieda's Soul Food. Patoshnik's was a few restaurants ago in that location but this wonderful mural survives.

I've (unfortunately) been walking around the city without my camera for several days. That said, being able to walk around without immediately looking into a viewfinder has allowed me to appreciate what I'm seeing in the moment. I'm struck by how beautiful Cincinnati is - the architecture, the art, the different and defined neighborhoods. I love this town.
